Concrete Jungle Skateboard Decks
Taking inspiration from local Brutalist architecture around South London, I developed a series of three skateboard decks playing on the concept of living in a concrete jungle. Collaging my own photographs of high rise blocks around Stockwell alongside drawings of tropical plants and birds, I created a trio of fun, surreal and vibrant decks.
The illustrations for this skateboard deck series were initially inspired by lockdown walks spent finding beauty in the endless layers of concrete architecture around South London. Patterns created by windows, staircases and walkways became a starting point for the collaged elements. The final illustrations emulate the sprawling, urban structures that rise above the skyline and criss-cross their way through the city. Drawings of flora and fauna weave among the cityscape in an imagined world where the tower blocks are their canopy.
All three skateboard designs are now available to buy as limited edition silk-screen prints. Each print in the ‘Concrete Jungle’ series honours the original size ratio of a skateboard deck was hand printed in my Brixton studio. The collection has been featured by Creative Boom in an article spotlighting the inspiration and process behind making the series.
