About Melissa
Melissa is a London based illustrator and screenprinter creating vibrant artworks with a silk-screen print aesthetic. With a process rooted in analogue techniques, Melissa collages together her own photography, drawings and handmade textures, resulting in layered illustrations that have a tactile quality. Years of mixing pigments by eye and adopting a playful approach to printmaking has made Melissa an expert in colour, and one of her greatest joys is discovering new and surprising combinations. As a result, the bright and bold colour palettes found throughout Melissa’s illustrations are inspired by those that she has used in her print studio.
A lover of travel and nature, Melissa draws inspiration from locations around the world with a particular focus on biodiversity. Getting lost in the research is one of Melissa’s favourite parts of a project, especially if it involves learning about plants, flowers and birds. The patterns found within nature and architecture are a constant source of inspiration, filling Melissa’s designs with intriguing motifs and bringing narratives to life in a world of colour.
Melissa’s work has spanned an entire deck of a cruise ship, uplifted hospital spaces, embellished designer wallets and been emblazoned on digital billboards.
Selected clients include: Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, CW+, Landor & Fitch, Liechtenstein National Museum, Printclub London, SAGA UK, SMC Design, Trove Wallets
Melissa is also the co-founder of Underway Studio, an illustration and printmaking collective based in Brixton. She collaborates with the members of Underway Studio on limited edition prints and leads regular screenprinting workshops at their Brixton studio.
